Expanding Awareness: Skills & Practices

The Expanding Awareness course is about much more than the sharing of ideas. At its heart, the goal of the course is to function more like a workshop; one that imparts skills that can be cultivated towards true mastery. The following is a list of some of the practical aspects that will be covered during the 12-week course:

  • Cultivating intuitive awareness over conceptualization
  • Practicing the principles of radical transparency
  • Recognizing when words spoken don’t match energetic output
  • Relating via energetic resonance rather than via language alone
  • Recognizing how untruths disturb the still, clear state of the shared field
  • Recognizing and resolving personal internal conflicts
  • Learning to expand one’s personal sphere of awareness
  • Learning to distinguish one’s own energy from other sources
  • Grounding state experiences so as to facilitate stage transitions
  • Tuning into and integrating bodily, mental and emotional states
  • Recognizing when shifting from inner motivation to cultural expectation
  • Learning to be precise with emotional feedback (key to conflict resolution)
  • Cultivating genuine, undistorted expression (and why it matters)
  • Learning to see energetic states as information (even when overwhelming and/or “negative”)
  • Growing our own agency (even when feeling limited by circumstances/busyness)
  • Learning to move beyond a transactional view of relationships
  • Cultivating the role of the impartial witness so as to foster agency
  • Expanding felt self-interest by cultivating shared “we-spaces”
  • Learning to recognize and re-integrate shadow aspects of the self
  • Learning to relate to real-time energy rather than according to roles/history

Expanding Awareness: Course Primer

Presently humankind is facing daunting challenges on numerous fronts; challenges that stretch our very capacity to fully grasp, let alone adequately handle. And yet, the writing is on the wall: if we fail to meet these challenges, they threaten our very existence. As such, we stand at a precipice of potential collective demise unlike any generation in the history of humankind.

Unfortunately, while we are more technologically advanced than any previous generation in history, our level of consciousness has not progressed at anywhere near the pace of our technological innovation. And, as such, that very real–but very one-dimensional–progress threatens to destroy not only our civilization, but essential elements of the encompassing biosphere right along with it.

It was Einstein who said a problem cannot be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it. And that aptly applies here. Contrary to popular opinion, our problems are ultimately rooted in consciousness, not in systems or technology. And simply put, the reason why we as a collective have not been able to rise to meet the challenges we face is that they are simply beyond the capacity of our present center of gravity of consciousness.

To solve the problems we face we need to not only handle them differently, we need to see them differently. And to see them differently we must see ourselves, and our relationship to them, differently. Please don’t misunderstand me: without doubt, systemic changes are unquestionably necessary to meet the challenges manifesting before us. Why? Because it’s clear that bandages and stopgaps will simply not do – that’s far from what’s required here. But, in addition to systemic changes, for truly comprehensive and lasting change to occur, we also need to be different; and that evolution in being needs to manifest in multiple ways.

Firstly, we need to unlearn many of the limiting, distorting lessons we’ve been indoctrinated with as denizens of modern civilization, while simultaneously (re-)discovering the expansive, multi-faceted aspects of our own deepest nature. Secondly, we need to grow into people who fully actualize our innate ability to tune into the broader sphere of consciousness that surrounds us; a sphere that we are intrinsically a part of, even if in many ways functionally cut-off from. Thirdly, we also need to be with each other differently. This involves rethinking – and eventually newly embodying – how we relate to one another.

The truth is, not only are we much more connected than we’ve been taught, we’re also much more able to experience that connection than most of us have so far realized. So much so, in fact, that this relational transformation enables us to eventually fundamentally change the very way we think of “self-interest”. And once that evolves, everything else evolves right along with it. With that new embodied understanding, our spirit of innovation can then rise to meet our present challenges, and in a truly organic way at that.

The transformation described in each of these evolutions of consciousness comes about via the practice of “expanding awareness” – hence the name of this 12-week long inspirational, communal, but wholly practical course; a course that is more a workshop than a forum for conceptual wisdom. What’s ultimately being transmitted here is an embodied, realized way of being differently in the world; being differently with the world, and being differently as the world. And each of these evolutions is central to this entire initiative, which is understandably called Essence of Being.

Defining Cosmic Consciousness

Sometimes we come across a term that has become part of our vernacular, but the precise meaning remains illusive. When that’s the case, the meaning assumed tends to be a little bit different for everyone, and will inevitably be shaped by our particular background and a series of assumptions we all bring to the table. This, after all, is human nature. We insert our own particular historical context when clarity is lacking. And this of course gets us through a world where context is not always – and, indeed, often is not – available.

While this often works well enough, there are other times when precision around meaning is vitally important. Indeed, something we will cover in depth in Expanding Awareness is just how important it is to be as clear as possible about the things we think and talk about. An expression that I often see bandied about in our modern world – that fits this bill of being part of of our vernacular, but perhaps in need of a discussion around a precise definition – is “cosmic consciousness”. When you hear that expression, what comes to mind?

Some people think about sheer size. We all know that the Cosmos is so vast that it – very literally – boggles the imagination. It is so large, in fact, that we have not the sufficient practical reference to picture it. So, that being the case, for some people “cosmic consciousness” might mean capturing as much as possible in what we see; relying on the largest available frame. That makes sense, because when we speak of the Cosmos we often mean “all that is”.

For others, “cosmic consciousness” refers to something more esoteric. This particular meaning tends to make the rounds in so-called New Age circles. Generally speaking, it’s in the same ballpark as an expression like “far out, man”; a refrain that would have been heard with some regularity in the Hyde Park area of San Francisco in the late 1960s. This expression, in this particular context, tends to mean something more transcendent; something loosely connected with an experience one might have while under the influence of psychedelics.

When I use this expression, both of these associations/connotations are baked in, but I don’t stop there. To explain what cosmic consciousness means in the context we’ll be using it, I will need to back up a little bit, and discuss a little thing known as the evolution of human consciousness over time. And that’s because the expression really only makes sense in terms of what it both transcends and includes (that’s another expression you’ll hear a lot about in Essence of Being, by the way).

Way back in the recesses of pre-history, when human beings first emerged on planet Earth, our sense of identity was largely limited to the sphere of concerns associated with our family unit. Our actions were influenced by a desire to serve the needs of this precisely defined sphere of care and concern; one defined by a direct genetic link and the closest social association (thus involving both “nature” and “nurture”).

Eventually, however, we recognized that we are better able to survive, and certainly more likely to thrive, when we join forces with other family units who tend to share that common list of cares and concerns with us. This marked the historical emergence of what we often refer to as “the tribe”, which can be defined as “a social division in traditional society consisting of families or communities linked by social, economic, religious, or blood ties, with a common culture and dialect, typically having a recognized leader”.

Now leap forward in time, extending this context further to include a shared geographic space, an economic system, and a system of laws and overarching governance, and we arrive at the modern notion of a nation-state. And for many people, even in today’s complex, interconnected world, that’s far enough. Many people effectively build primary meaning around a shared identity defined by their particular nation-state. Think here of the symbolism around national flags and shared pastimes that serve as a kind of modern set of rituals that knit the group together.

I already hinted in that last paragraph that one of the revelations that has emerged as we’ve grown to better understand our shared world is that, despite our best efforts and preferences, the natural environment we are a part of doesn’t tend to behave according to the social divisions we have formed. Take, for instance, climate: one thing that’s become alarmingly obvious in recent decades is that what one nation-state – or even a larger geographical region – does, inextricably impacts every other nation-state and geographical region around the world.

In other words, despite where we would like to draw borders, the global environment behaves as a single, indivisible whole. And, as the saying goes, reality just is, regardless of how you feel about it. This knowledge about the interconnected, symbiotic nature of the environment has led many to adopt a more global-centric perspective; one that transcends nation-states and geographic regions, as well as various cultural and creedal backgrounds.

As our understanding of the context we live within expanded and became more nuanced, many came to realize that, not only should basic rights be extended to every human being on Earth, but they should also be extended – to one degree of another – to all sentient life forms present, including the animals who share the planet with us. By the way, as you may have noticed, the sphere of care and concern we’re referencing here is not just more expansive, it is also more inclusive, as the evolution of consciousness rolls on – because these two are part and parcel of each other.

Of course, while the earth is very much our home, it is somewhat arbitrary to draw a new, more expansive border in the form of a sphere the exact size of our planet. And that’s because our planet would not be the environment it is, if not for other mediating factors; such as its position in our solar system amidst the other planets, and particularly in its particular distance from the sun; the life-giving engine of the entire enterprise. And, of course, our solar system is just one of many within the Milky Way, and the Milky Way just one galaxy amongst billions in the Cosmos. In Buddhism, this fundamental interconnectedness of being is known as the doctrine of “dependent origination”.

Add to this mix the knowledge that humankind is – and, indeed, to one degree of another, always has been – in contact with beings from seemingly beyond the confines of our planet, and even from beyond the narrow, reductive confines of what is often referred to “consensus reality”, and it’s not surprising to see why we end up where we do: at cosmic consciousness; recognizing that our true, shared identity is in the totality; in the size and scope of absolutely all that is, in all that spectacular, multifaceted multidimensionality. This is a totality which, as immensely vast and intricate as it is, also just so happens to be – even according to our best and latest science – a single, entangled – and thus, ultimately indivisible – whole.

Expanding Awareness… Together

Some will suggest that the deepest truths pertaining to life and ultimate reality are already available, and indeed have been for millennia. Those who say such things will point to the fact that saints and sages of long ago broke through the ceiling of human limitation and discovered penetrating and enduring truths about who we are and our place in the enfolding cosmic order. Since these consciousness giants shared those insights via ancient, transcendent teachings, the argument is that everything you need is there on the written page.

Now, on the one hand – and in a very real way – this notion is correct. Truth is truth, no matter where you find it, as the saying goes. And many of the deepest, most consequential revelations regarding reality have already been explored and elucidated by those consciousness pioneers whose shoulders we now stand upon. And, yes indeed, those truths can be found, for instance, in some of humanity’s most ancient and enduring spiritual texts.

However, on the other hand, this belief that simply digesting truth by reading about it, in a purely cognitive exercise, is how these truths are metabolized, is one of our most enduring (and misleading) modern myths. Yes, initial insights can emerge simply by hearing about these foundational truths, but actually grounding, that is to say — integrating — these truths, into our very being, is something else entirely. That takes practice. That requires wisdom. That takes what in Buddhist tradition is known as “skillful means”.

Some teachers will refer to this kind of truth communication as being “more caught that taught”, which is to say, while concepts are helpful – because they help us to stand up some initial scaffolding to play with – ultimately these truths, skills and competencies are learned by seeing them in practice via those who’ve already somatically embodied them. And that’s because of course they are much more than ideas — much more than mere conceptions we upload into our minds.

At a deeper level of understanding we’re really speaking of energetic resonances. And in a culture that has largely forgotten, avoided, or voided these notions, the only way one really begins to grok them is by seeing them in action; even more so, by feeling them in action. This process of energetic transmission is exactly what is encapsulated in the lineages established within various spiritual traditions.

This is precisely why the Expanding Awareness course is as much a workshop as it is a passing on of ideas. As we begin to embark on this journey, being with those who can help host a space for this energetic resonance to manifest is key. Using the analogy of scaffolding again, doing this with those who’ve already established these competencies helps both define the borders and prime the energy for the experience — which we can then learn to host within ourselves. Furthermore, doing this with others is paramount because, together, we are not only much more than we are alone, but we’re also much more than the sum of our parts. Together we form a powerful coherent field of awareness that is felt in our most innermost selves.

Those who’ve only ever taken traditional concept-based courses often find these kinds of embodiment programs to truly be a breath of fresh air. And that’s because, not only do they help to teach us new skills, but just as — if not more importantly — they help awaken a long dormant part of ourselves. The truth is we’ve always possessed the innate, base capacity for a deeper and broader energetic awareness, it’s just that this aspect of ourselves has been left woefully underdeveloped in light of our modern society’s focus on a purely physical universe. The Expanding Awareness course is designed with the sole purpose of reacquainting us with this capacity; a capacity that is a human birthright.
